Tips from a master clown

RENOWNED master clown Philippe Gaulier basically teaches many a performing artiste how not to be boring. His students include Ali G (Sacha Baron Cohen), Emma Thompson, and Helena Bonham Carter.

Gaulier developed the Le Jeu (pronounced lay shoo) method which is conducted through fun and games.

Says Cohen, in an article in UK’s The Telegraph: “He’s the man. Without him, I really do doubt whether I would have had any success in my field.”

Cohen studied with Gaulier for a year before embarking on his stand-up comedy routine. Oscar winner Roberto Benigni (of Life is Beautiful fame) also studied with Gaulier.

Every year, students from around the world seek admittance to his École Philippe Gaulier, based at Etampes, France.

Gaulier also teaches management teams from corporations, usually overturning what one knows of the art of leadership.

The theatre master will conduct classes from Aug 14-18 at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPaC).

The classes kick-start the Kakiseni Arts Exchange 2012, which is scheduled for September.

A Kakiseni press release states that the exchange “is one of the many efforts to drive talent development”.

The initiative is in partnership with the National Culture and Arts Department, Pemandu and supported by the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture.

Applications for the classes end tomorrow.Visit www.kakiseni.com for details.
