Local producer-director K. Annan Joseph’s latest movie is filled with action and mystery, writes Subhadra Devan
GANGSTERISM takes centre stage, again, in the locally-produced Tamil movie Ops Kossa Dappa 3 — The Final Dappa.
The film is an action-packed drama about a group of policemen who find that their work to bust a local mob boss is cut out for them when a shaman brings her mythical skills to the case, explains producer-director K. Annan Joseph.
The Petaling Jaya-born Annan is well-known for his two previous Ops Kappa Dappa — the sci-fi Yantra (2007) and horror I Know What You Did Last Deepavali The Movie (2011).
The word dappa is of Tamil origin and generally means beat or slap. The first two Ops movies were well-received and saw straight-to-video distribution. This third instalment will be the first to be screened in cinemas nationwide.
“There are some parts in the movie which are inspired by true events,” he says.
The movie also touches on the legend of Tasik Chini in Pahang and its fabled creature. “However, it is not based on any events which may have occurred there,” says Annan.
Ops 3 stars Bollywood actress-model Priyanka Kothari and Kollywood actor Kadhal Dhandapani, as well as local stars Amber Chia, Afdlin Shauki, Sashitharan, Logan, and Jasmine.
“I also have international stars in guest roles for the film such as Priyanka Kothari from Bombay and Kadhal Dhandapani from Chennai.
“Directing Amber and the other actors was easy as they are all professionals. The entire team didn’t have any difficulties working with them as they were very co-operative.”
Priyanka got her big break through actor Madhavan, who recommended her for an audition in his Tamil film, Jay Jay, credited as Amoga. She made her Bollywood debut in the 2005 film Sarkar and went on to do The Killer with Emraan Hashmi. Her most recent release was Bin Bulaye Baraati.
Veteran Indian actor Kadhal last appeared in Kollywood movies Velayutham and Pokkiriraja.
Ops Kossa Dappa 3 — The Final Dappa, produced and distributed by SSK Resources Sdn Bhd, will be screened later this year.
