OWL City arose from Adam Young’s insomnia.
The Minnesota-born Young started the project in his parents’ basement, amusing himself with a computer and several instruments. From there came this blend of electronica and emo-pop. He uploaded his songs onto MySpace and Hello Seattle, an ode to the Emerald City, went viral, getting Young a contract with Universal Republic.
Debut album Ocean Eyes in 2009 coincided with the launch of Owl City’s first national tour. From that came chart-topper Fireflies, selling more than three million singles. A deluxe edition of the album appeared in 2010, featuring seven bonus tracks and reissues Maybe I’m Dreaming and Of June. In 2011, Young released All Things Bright and Beautiful, his first collection of new material in years.
And here he is with 2007’s Canadian Idol third-placed Carly Rae Jepsen, on Good Time.
The single, released on June 26, is steadily climbing the charts, with music critics calling it a catchy summer song. Young, 25, is currently touring and is scheduled to play in South Korea on July 27 for the Jisan Valley Rock Festival 2012 and in Japan on July 28.
