Scotsman Ewan (Gordon) McGregor has over 50 mainstream, indie and art house films. Subhadra Devan peeks at his career in conjunction with his movie Fishing In The Yemen

1. Being Human
McGregor, at 23, made his film debut appearing in director Bill Forsyth’s intriguing Being Human (1994), starring Robin Williams.

2. Trainspotting
In 1996, the man from Scotland’s Perth was the darling of the indie film scene with his portrayal of charming addict Mark Renton in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting which earned him a London Film Critics Circle Award for Best British Actor.

3. Brassed Off
Displaying his romantic side opposite Tara Fitzgerald, McGregor was an unemployed mineworker performing in a brass band in the well-received drama-comedy, Brassed Off (1997).

4. ER
McGregor reached mainstream American television viewers as a petty crook whose attempted robbery of a convenience store goes awry in an episode of ER (NBC, 1994-2009), which earned him an Emmy Award nomination for best guest-starring appearance.

5. Little Voice
After famously offering full frontal nudity on screen as a glam-rock musician in Velvet Goldmine, the never bashful star rounded out 1998 with a performance of a painfully shy telephone installer who keeps carrier pigeons in Little Voice (picture).

6. Star Wars Prequels
Stardom struck again when McGregor played the light sabre-wielding Obi-Wan Kenobi in three Star Wars prequels —The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack Of The Clones (2002) and Revenge Of The Sith (2005).

7. Moulin Rouge
In 2001, he took on the romantic, and singing, leading man role of the talented, but naive writer who falls in love with a doomed courtesan (Nicole Kidman) in the musical, Moulin Rouge. It won him awards including the London Film Critics’ Circle Award for British Actor of the Year and MTV Movie Award for Best Musical Sequence (shared with Kidman).

8. The Men Who Stare At Goats
Now going back and forth between studio features and small independents with ease, in 2009 he had three films including in The Men Who Stare At Goats, with George Clooney.

9. I Love You Phillip Morris
In 2010, four films saw McGregor’s talents including  Nanny McPhee Returns and I Love You Phillip Morris (picture).

10. Salmon Fishing In The Yemen
You can witness McGregor as a taciturn fisheries expert, Dr Alfred Jones, with Emily Blunt, in Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, now playing at GSC International Screens.
