Bringing Sarawak arts to US

THE art forms of Sarawak are being promoted in the United States by four artists of Society Atelier Sarawak this month. Led by its president, Edric Ong, the other three are Bangie Embol (Iban pua kumbu weaver), Mathew Ngau Jau (sapeh musician and bark artist) and Michael Lim (batik artist).

The promotion, which ends July 30, is organised by Dr David McLanahan of Jungle Arts And Flora, Seattle. From Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, the team is moving on to various venues in Seattle, Krimsa Gallery in San Francisco, Sawdust Festival at Laguna, and the Santa Barbara Museum in California.

“Society Atelier Sarawak will be promoting, through this roadshow, our International Symposium And Exhibition On Natural Dyes/World Eco-Fibre And Textile, to be held in Kuching (Sept 27-Oct 1),” says Ong.

The trip was made possible through the sponsorship of Sarawak Convention Bureau and various American host organisations. The team has made similar tours to the United States in the past and has garnered a wide fan base.

Ong will showcase his latest creations of natural dye fashion and textiles featuring ketapang and bakau dyes which can be viewed at www.edricong.com.
