Fashion Notebook: Put on the bright lights

IT’S almost blinding and it leaves you blinking but the neon trend is hot right now and it's hard not to be taken in the high-spirited summer splash.

Fashionistas are walking the trend bravely by swinging bags in the pinkest of pinks, the blue-est of blues, the greenest of greens!

Black and whites are now back and it is time to add those bright shades from the 1980s. Raid your mum’s wardrobe or even granny’s — there may be some treasure there!

Assorted accessories are brightly displayed in hair clips, Alice headbands, bangles of all sizes, necklaces of various textures and brooches of all shapes. Everything is interwoven in the flashy neons of the day.

Any look can be enhanced by accessorising with these trinkets. They don’t cost much and are available in high street shops as well as in high-end stores.

I, for one, go over the top with neon brooches to cheer me up on busy workday. There is no excuse to stay on being blue or be in conventional black and white — especially when you have an invite to rock in such colours.

    YOUNG ONES

College-girl-friendly, these bright neon collections are, I feel, best left to teenagers to hop around with on campus, in public or at functions.

Women over 40 should probably not be neon-clad from head to toe to avoid seeking too much unwanted attention! This is by no means a discrimination against any age group — fashionistas of any age can rock in all the colours they wish.

It is more about confidence and the image you wish to portray of yourself. This is just a suggestion after several “fashion-police” experiences from  personal observations at fashion events.

Of course, many would agree that to be dressed head to toe in neon and nothing else is just too much... unless you're the clown at the party!

It is always wise to balance colours, textures, and styling in whatever we wear and wherever we go, no matter what age we are.

Skirts in neons, of all lengths and shapes, whether tiered, layered, or patched, are the trendiest. Team these with pastel coloured tees or with tops in neutrals.
The combination ensures that the wearer does not stick out in a crowd which is sometimes, a good thing.

    CAULDRON OF COLOURS

Glittery colours are sweet in a way. Fashionistas give out that overall schoolgirl look — a way to do away with your serious office wear.

A neon scarf around your neck or a pair of neon-coloured flats on your feet say you are a fun person. No one likes gloom and doom. More sunshine and happiness all around is what the world needs.

So go ahead, be brave! If you have not yet started with neons, it is best worn in parts, with a combo of other coloured and other textured garments.

Neon shades create cheerfulness to the overall look. One who is brightly dressed cannot but look happy and approachable. Others around you will feel the glow and join in the fun of the occasion.

Neon sneakers worn with matching long-sleeved T-shirt or layered over with billowing blouse or short-kaftan of pastel hues and stone-washed jeans look cool. Complete the look by arming yourself with a huge neon bag or an oversized clutch.

These hot colours are cool. Carry them with caution and confidence and you are on your way to making a fashion statement.
