Few cartoon characters have the endearing effect of Disney’s, and its fashion wear is always popular, writes Kasmiah Mustapha
DISNEY characters are timeless and have been loved by almost every generation since their creation in the 1930s. No matter how old you may be, you are more than likely to feel a tinge of nostalgia for characters you have grown up with, like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, Pluto and Goofy. And because you are never too old to love them, you are also never too old to wear them.
Cashing on this nostalgia, Giordano has teamed up with Disney for its Spring/Summer 2012 collection. The Simply Me collection (already available in Hong Kong, China and Singapore) is now here.
There are T-shirts, leggings, leggings with skirts, harem pants and tote bags with Mickey and Minnie Mouse print. It also features limited edition T-shirts with the famous Mickey Mouse head icon in neon print in pink, orange and yellow.
With over 18 print designs in the men’s, women’s and children’s collection, there is bound to be one for you. If you are into dressing alike with your partner, there is a his and hers T-shirt. The girl’s T-shirt has Minnie Mouse puckering up for a kiss on the left side and for the boy, the blue T-shirt has Mickey Mouse on the right side. When both of you wear them, it looks like both Mickey and Minnie are almost kissing. Corny, but cute.
For teen girls, the off-shoulder T-shirt works well with the Minnie-print leggings. The polka dot poncho Minnie T-shirt in white background also looks nice with leggings or jeans. A poncho T-shirt shows Minnie’s feet–while the other only has her head are also part of the collection for women.
ON THE BALL
More stylish is the shoulder-ball T-shirt which, at first glance looks like a bib. They come in red with black polka dots with the head icon. They also come in red with Minnie designs.
For men, there are black and white striped T-shirts or plain white with only Mickey’s legs or the head icon as well as a silhouette version. If the men are daring enough, they can wear them with harem pants.
The children’s collection also boasts the same style, design and colours. Perhaps to make it easy for the whole family to coordinate their fashion pick for the day.
Giordano general manager See Mei Ling says the collection - with 18 print designs - focuses on T-shirts and leggings as they had wanted the casual and urban look for this collection.
“They can mix and match with shorts or jeans. A T-shirt is the preferred choice for teens for everyday wear. For me, a shirt is more smart casual, so it won’t go well with our image. And the harem pants is actually a hit with our customers.”
She says this is the second time Giordano has teamed-up with Disney. As the target customers for the collection are teens and those in their 20s, Disney’s image as young and trendy suits the brand.
NEW PRINT
Admitting that Giordano is not the first brand to come up with Disney character–related apparel, See says the collection differs from others as it has a distinctive touch with graphics and print effects.
“Normally Disney would have a colourful and fun look for other brands, but Giordano has changed the concept as we want to be different. You will find the print to be very simple and trendy and only focuses on two colours, black and white. We have added a different kind of print effect to make it stand out more with 3-D presentation such as flocking and high density print. You can’t find them with other brands because it is a complicated process.”
In addition, the trimming inside the T-shirt’s neckline is embroidered with the Mickey head icon and hot stamped at the bottom of the garment.
See says Giordano will be launching the second phase of the collection by the end of the month which will feature other Disney characters such as Donald and Daisy Duck, Goofy and Pluto.
The collection — priced between RM69 and RM109 are available at Giordano stores nationwide.
