Media Prima’s Ramadan and Raya goodies offer a high flying experience, writes Dennis Chua

BOX office movie Kongsi, which raked in RM8.9 million, will be one of the specialties on Media Prima television stations this Ramadan and Raya. It stars the recent winner of Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian, Shaheizy Sam.

Besides Kongsi, movies on TV3 and TV9 include Ngangkung (which also stars Shaheizy), Hantu Gengster (Datuk David Arumugam of The Alleycats), Apa Celop Toqq (Akademi Fantasia 9 champion Hazama Azmi) and animated movie Bola Kampung featuring the voiceover talents of Douglas Lim, Afdlin Shauki and Marsha Londoh.

Hot actress and television personality Neelofa Mohd Noor will host Dapur Panas every Sunday on TV3, where she will interview men from the sports world and the army, among others, who have to work and cook during Ramadan.

These Ramadan and Raya 2013 goodies are packaged under three themes — Seindah Ramadan, Anugerah Syawal and Come Fly With Us.

Media Prima television networks chief executive officer Ahmad Izham Omar says the programmes on TV3, ntv7, 8TV and TV9 in July and August are both local and foreign productions of various genres. These are also available via online video portal Tonton (www.tonton.com.my).

He says: “Seindah Ramadan emphasises that the fasting month is a celebration of good deeds, while Anugerah Syawal denotes the Raya month’s arrival as a reward for the sacrifices we make during Ramadan.”

Come Fly With Us is about Media Prima’s efforts to go “sky high” in providing quality television programmes for viewers.

“We want our festive programmes to broaden our reach to not only traditional television viewers but also to a wider audience via Tonton,” says Ahmad Izham. He says that Media Prima intends to build upon previous years’ achievements, where TV3 and TV9 achieved 42 per cent viewer share for the fasting month and 48 per cent for the Raya month.

This, he says, was because of the mix of quality movies, telemovies, documentaries, series and musicals, among others. An estimated 10 million viewers (comprising 77 per cent of Malay viewers) watched both channels.

TV3
TV3’s Ramadan specialties include documentaries, magazines and talk shows as Jejak Rasul 19, Unsung Places, Sembang Sahur, Selera Madrasah and Kisah Mualaf.

There will be Raya editions for TV3 series such as Adnan Sempit, Ayam, OMG, Senario, Anuar Zain’s Konsert Tiga Dekad and Raya entertainment programmes Sampaikan Raya, Dikir Stail and Kecoh Pengacara Beraya.

TV9
TV9 targets young audiences with Ketupat Rendang Kopi O, Mencari Resipi Temurun, Jom Berbuka, Versus Raya and Unplugged Rockestra. Datuk Siti Nurhaliza will share the stage with Alyah Abu Hassan and Najwa Latif in Unplugged on TV9.

Raya musical programmes include Mini Busking, Switch Off Raya, Mad Markets Raya, Kidnap, Bintang Mencari Bintang Raya, Oh Kampungku!, Mimpi Fara, Mana Kuali Opah? and Sweet Lola.

ntv7
ntv7, which targets urban viewers, has its very own Raya theme, Rasa Raya Rasa Ceria. Its talk shows, such as The Breakfast Show and Bella will have Ramadan and Raya specials, and The Foodie Blogger Raya Special will feature traditional cuisine from Kedah and Terengganu.

There will be special entertainment programmes such as Westlife: The Farewell Concert, Big Bang Big Show 2011 and an exclusive, specially edited version of the Bella Awards 2013 featuring Ronan Keating, Gary Chaw, Marcell, Rossa and Mizz Nina.

The comedy, Little Fockers, starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, animated adventures How To Train Your Dragon and Doraemon In Nobita And The Steel Troops — The New Age, and Chinese martial arts movies Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (starring Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh) and Twin Dragons (Jackie Chan) will be the blockbusters on the Feel Good Channel.

TV8
On 8TV, musical programmes are aplenty, such as I Heart Radio Music Festival, M Countdown: Hello Japan, K-Pop Music Festival In Sydney, and The 8TV Quickie Raya Special — The Will starring the popular talk show’s current hosts.

The K-Pop Music Festival features South Korean pop groups and artistes such as SNSD, TVXQ, B2ST, SHINee, 4Minute, Sistar, CN Blue, 2AM, MBLAQ, Kara and Secret. M Countdown features performances by K-Pop acts FT Island, Busker Busker, Miss A, 4Minute, U-Kiss and Tiger JK.

Also in the lineup is the documentary Muslims In China 2013 that focuses on Muslims in Harbin, China.

8TV’s festive movies include the semi-historical Hong Kong movie Bodyguards And Assassins starring Donnie Yen and The Transporter 3 starring Jason Statham.

Ahmad Izham says Tonton has over three million registered users and is accessible on computers, smartphones and tablets for free. He says the telemovie Gengster Kampung Pisang starring the Hot FM radio personalities will premiere on Tonton 24 hours before it is screened on TV9.

Viewers will get a new experience with telemovie Karlos Raya starring award-winning Johan Asari and Nur Risteena, in that they are provided with smart gadgets to directly interact with the cast.

Other movies on Tonton include Buli and Buli Balik starring Afdlin Shauki and Hans Isaac, Perempuan Melayu Terakhir (Vanidah Imran) and Selubung (Deanna Yusoff).

Datuk Sudirman Arshad’s One Thousand Million Smiles concert and Gegar Bersama Search will also be available on Tonton, as will the popular series Setia Hujung Nyawa, 7 Ramadan and Ramadan Terakhir.

Neelofa hosts Dapur Panas on TV3.

Shaheizy Sam stars in Kongsi on TV3.
