No zippers or buttons, no ironing needed. Nadia Badarudin finds a range that is practical and classic
IT’S every woman’s wish to have a wardrobe of basic items which are versatile and which can transform into a glamorous look with just a touch of creativity.
Well, Lena Basics might just have what you need. The line is a collection of 14 monochromatic black and grey separates — tops, bottoms and dresses — that are suitable for working mums and women on-the-go.
The collection is the brainchild of jeweller-turned-fashion designer Jaslena Ahmad.
“My designs are for women aged 20-50, of all shapes and sizes. They are suitable for any occasion, lifestyle and activity, be it work, running errands or attending a business meeting and dinner party.
“They can be mixed and matched according to one’s own style. Each piece is cut on the bias for a more comfortable and flattering fit. In other words, the pieces are specifically designed to accentuate one’s assets and hide flaws,” says Jaslena, who started her venture in 2007 with custom-made jewellery made from imported semi-precious stones.
The former corporate player says the collection includes short box and long wrap cardigans, trapeze dresses, a square neckline tank top, a V-top with long sleeves, a shawl and A-line skirts.
The pants come in three variations including skinny, wide-legged pull-to-the-underarm tube, and palazzo with a sarong-style wrap front.
“The collection is made from imported, easy-care, spandex-infused jersey fabric that retains the shape of each piece when worn. And the shawl is trimmed with grosgrain in Lena’s signature pink,” she says.
NO ZIPPERS, NO BUTTONS
Lena Basics is more than just a range of wardrobe staples. Emphasising versatility and flexibility, each piece is designed without zippers or buttons.
“The idea comes from my own personal experience.
“I’ve a busy schedule every day. Apart from running my own business and the household, I have two small, school-going children to take care of. It’s not easy, especially since I don’t have a helper at home.
“Rushing from one place to another and keeping a hectic schedule, I needed comfortable clothes — are practical, easy and quick to wear. And that’s how the idea came about,” she says.
Apart from being seamless, her creations do not need ironing and are very cooling and comfortable to wear.
She says the basic pieces can be worn together, or combined with what women already have in their wardrobes.
“You can wear the pieces with your jeans or other designers’ apparels. The same attire that you wear to the office during the day can easily be transformed into an elegant outfit for dinner,” she says.
“Just put on some glittery jewellery or accessories, change your handbag, put on your favourite heels, and you’re ready to go.”
Jaslena says her designs are also suitable for women wearing the hijab or tudung — they can wear the long-sleeved V-top dress with a long skirt or palazzo pants, and match it with a bright-coloured tudung and unique accessories such as a statement ring or a dainty watch.
She adds that the monochromatic black and grey in all her pieces make it easier to mix and match the clothes.
“An outfit in monochromatic colours may be mundane for the uninitiated, but it can be turned into a stylish one with strong fashion flair,” she says.
“The idea is to accessorise. Try carrying a red handbag to go with the monochrome-coloured outfit. That’s understated classy elegance, isn’t it?”
