Shazreen wins K-pop star hunt title

THE search is finally over. Nur Shazreen Sharupidin and Khairul Najmuddin Abu Samah beat thousands of hopefuls to emerge as the champion and first runner-up respectively at the tvN K-Pop Star Hunt.

As Malaysia’s representatives, they will be up against other winners from other countries for the ultimate prize — a contract with Korea’s media and entertainment company, CJ E&M and Cube Entertainment, and a chance to release an album and to perform at the MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) 2013 alongside G.Na and 4 Minute.

Shazreen impressed the judges, including Cube Entertainment’s Park Jae-Hyun, with her rendition of TaeTiSeo’s Baby Steps. Park’s talent-scouting ability has earned him respect and admiration from various producers, casting directors and talent agencies and he has signed some of the biggest names in the K-Pop industry such as TVXQ, Super Junior, the Wonder Girls, Beast, 2PM, 2AM and 4Minute.

On the other hand, Khairul stood out with his incredible vocals and slick dance moves, singing Bruno Mars’ Grenade. “I was very anxious even before I went onstage. I wanted this so badly. Everyone is incredibly talented and I wasn’t sure if I could win. Big thanks to everyone who encouraged me to participate and also  to tvN for presenting Malaysians this chance of a lifetime,” he said.

“I was very nervous before my performance. But as soon as I was on stage, I gave it my best shot. I want to thank tvN for giving me this golden opportunity,” said Shazreen.

Over the span of two days, 150 contestants were selected from over 1,000 entries, where they must perform as a trio in front of the judges. From there, 11 contestants were shortlisted to perform solo at the finals, which was held at the Fahrenheit 88 shopping centre. TvN HD teamed up with CJ E&M to select the most outstanding contestants from Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries to be the next K-Pop Star.

The tvN K-Pop Star Hunt can be viewed on tvN HD, HyppTV channel 181.
