KUANTAN: It was a double joy for nine pairs of twins in Inderapura constituency here when they were feted by their state assemblyman and get the chance of socialising with other twin siblings.
At the age of 22, twins Nabila Syafiqa Mohyen and Nabila Syaqira, 22, are the youngest pair at the breaking fast event for twins under the Inderapura constituency hosted by state assemblyman Datuk Shafik Fauzan Sharif.
The girls from Taman Rasau Perdana, said they were initially surprised to get a call from Shafik who is also the state Tourism, the Arts and Heritage committee chairman, inviting them to the event yesterday.
“It is an eye-opener as we get to meet other twins, some of them living in Inderapura here,” said the International Islamic University student, who studies at the main campus in Gombak, Selangor.
There are 18 pairs of twins under the Inderapura electoral list but only half of them could join the event.
For 67-year-old Mohamed Abdul Aziz of Kampung Razali here, he was pleasantly surprised when Shafik invited him to join the programme.
"This is the first time my twin, Ahmad and I took part in an event involving so many pairs of twins. It is especially meaningful to us as senior citizens.”
"Events like this can strengthen the personal bonds not only between the other twins but also with our state representative," he said.
Meanwhile, Shafik said the idea of gathering the twins came to him when he had the opportunity to go through the state constituency's voter list of 10,300 people.
"I wanted to give them a surprise and I called them personally. Some of them could not believe their ears and thought it was all a dream."
"While breaking fast, we were able to get to know them better," he said adding that the programme's success had prompted him to plan for a bigger gathering of twins with the help of government agencies and the private sector.
