BUKIT MERTAJAM: THE husband who allegedly beats up his wife in a lift claimed trial to the offence in the magistrate's court here today.

The suspect, Mohammad Affandi Ismail, 36, who works as a veterinary district officer in Jerantut, Pahang was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to Siti Khadijah Ahmad Ramli, 37, at the KPJ Hospital here about 4pm last Monday.
The charge, under Section 323 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum one year's jail, or with a maximum RM2,000 fine or both.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Suhaimi Ibrahim, who prosecuted, proposed bail to be set at RM7,000.
The accused, who was not represented, pleaded for the amount to be reduced as he had just celebrated Hari Raya.
Magistrate Arif Mohd Shariff then set bail at RM5,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 29 for mention.
The case had garnered widespread attention after the accused was caught on camera punching and kicking his wife in front of their children in a lift at a private hospital.

The video went viral on social networking sites and Youtube, after it was uploaded.
