Nigerian student gets jail for phishing scam

SHAH ALAM: A Nigerian student was sentenced to one year’s jail by the Sessions Court yesterday over a phishing scam.

Judge Aslam Zainuddin sentenced Lazarus Chukwunenye Chikereuba, 26, a student from a private college, after he pleaded guilty to two charges under the Computer Crimes Act 1997.

Lazarus admitted to securing access to website without authorisation and with cheating Maybank Bhd by performing unauthorised access to the same website.

Both offences were committed at No. 39, Jalan SS19/5C in Subang Jaya between 11am and 11.05am on Sept 5 last year.

Aslam ordered Lazarus to serve eight months’ jail for the first offence, and another 12 months for the second, the sentences to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on Oct 31 last year.

DPP Faten Hadni Kamaruddin prosecuted while counsel M. Tharuma Ratnam represented the accused.
