Sungai Limau by election: Kedah BN to announce candidate Oct 21
ALOR STAR: Barisan Nasional to announce its candidate for the Sungai Limau by-election on Oct 21, two days before the nomination day.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said the state Barisan Nasional was shortlisting possible candidates for the by-election but declined to elaborate.
Mukhriz said issues concerning BN candidate and machinery preparation would be discussed with Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during his visit to Kedah next Tuesday.
Asked whether the nomination date, which falls four days after the Umno divisional and supreme council election, would affect the BN machinery, Mukhriz said he did not see that it would.
"As we all know, we (BN) can not influence the Election Commission on the by-election dates but I think we will have an ample time to prepare our machinery for the nomination day," he said after attending a gathering with the Islamic religious department and agencies in the state here yesterday.
Mukhriz said the state BN machinery had been activated and would be fully prepared to face the battle to wrest Sungai Limau from Pas.
Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof announced today that the nomination day for Sungai Limau by-election has been fixed on Oct 23 followed by the polling day on Nov 4.
The seat fell vacant following the demise of former Kedah Menteri Besar Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak last week.
Azizan had retained the seat for the fifth term in the 13th General Election after beating BN candidate, Fazillah Mohd Ali, who is also his cousin and two other Independent candidates with a 2,774 majority votes.
