SHOWBIZ: Dance drama tribute to sage

IN conjunction with the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Sri Ganesalaya Bharatanatyam school, classical dance guru Sri Ganesan will present a dance drama Bramam Okate with 30 of his dancers under the auspices of the TAM (Telugu Malaysia) Foundation.

The dance drama will take place at the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre Auditorium, Jalan Yong Shook Lin, Petaling Jaya at 7pm on July 1.

Bramam Okate means All One and is in line with the 1Malaysia slogan.

The dance drama will feature the kirthis (devotional songs) of Annamachariar, a sage who wrote more then 32,000 songs in the 14th century. Most of his songs are in Sanskrit and Telugu. Ganesan was voted Best Male Dancer in India in 1985 at the country’s Talent Promotion Scheme. He became the first foreigner to win such acclaim.

In 1999, he received the Golden Jubilee Celebrations Award Swayam Prakasa Nartaka for his contributions to Bharatanatyam.
