IPOH: The country's private sector has been urged to be more involved in corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said under creative capitalism, the private sector should not only focus on making profits, but must also contribute to the development of the nation. This could be done through CSR initiatives.
"The private sector must organise programmes to increase the capacity of the people... if capacity increases, the economic capacity will also increase.
"This will provide a more conducive environment for the private sector to increase their profits," he said after handing out Hari Raya Aidilfitri financial aid to about 1,000 people in Tambun, near here, yesterday.
Husni, who is also Tambun member of parliament, cited the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), set up under the Finance Ministry Incorporated, as a good example of CSR initiative.
He said for three consecutive years, 1MDB had provided financial aid to help repair rundown houses of the poor nationwide.
"This year, 1MDB also handed out tithes to orphans, the disabled, se-nior citizens and the poor for Hari Raya.
"In my constituency alone, more than RM160,000 was given out, benefiting about 1,000 people."
Meanwhile, taxi driver Zainuddin Awang, 59, who accompanied his two disabled daughters to receive their financial aid from Husni, thanked 1MDB for their gesture.
"The money will come in handy. I will use it buy new clothes and other items for my daughters."
Zainuddin's daughters, Nur Munairah Zainuddin, 18, suffers from cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair, while Nur Balqis, 20, suffers from a limp.
