Killer dog to be put to sleep

SUBANG JAYA: Beacon, the dog which mauled an elderly jogger to death, will be put to sleep.

The municipal court here yesterday sanctioned an order by the Veterinary Department to revoke Elaine Soon Sien Ling's licence to own him, to enable them to put the dog to sleep.

Soon, 28, an accountant, was hauled to court yesterday for the second time.

The first was at the Petaling Jaya magistrate's court on Monday and she was fined RM2,000 for being negligent with her pet.

Yesterday, she was charged under a by-law on dog attacks and was liable to pay a maximum RM2,000 fine, or up to a year in jail, or both.

Magistrate K.B. Elena Hong Tze Lan imposed the maximum fine on Soon after she pleaded guilty to being the owner of the dog which attacked a person in front of her house at Jalan SS19/5B here on May 8.

In the incident, Yip Sun Wah, 74, was jogging in SS19 here when the dog escaped from Soon's house and pounced on him.

The dog only let go of the victim when neighbours hit it with an umbrella and a cane. Yip died at the scene.

Hong told Soon that her dog was a prohibited breed. (Beacon is a cross between a miniature bull terrier and an American Staffordshire terrier).

Soon said she did not know that Beacon was a prohibited breed and that she had a licence from the council for the dog.

She added that she adopted the dog as a guard dog.

She said her home was burgled before and when she got the dog, she took it to the veterinarian to make sure it was healthy.
