GEORGE TOWN: A group of animal-rights activists have sent a proposal to the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) recently in a bid to save the stray dogs and cats population on the island.
The five-team group, led by Save Our Strays (SOS), is campaigning for authorities to neuter strays to control the stray population.
Independent animal rescuer April Sham said culling these animals is not effective and inhumane.
"It is important that the authorities know the best way to manage the stray population. We have put forth our proposal to get a win-win situation for the animals and the state," she said.
"In the meeting, we have shown them the efforts of independent rescuers and given suggestions on how to handle stray dogs," Sham said.
The group comprised the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better, Malaysia Independent Animal Rescue and Penang Humane Rescue.
Sham said details of the proposal will be revealed later, pending on a review by MPPP. By Predeep Nambiar
