SWIMMING: Cai Lin going to London

KHOO Cai Lin will compete in the Olympics after receiving an invite from FINA, the world governing body for aquatics, for the women's 800m freestyle, on Tuesday.

The Sea Games champion initially did not make the cut when the world body released the top six qualifiers under the Olympic invitational time for the respective 26 events.

Compatriots Siow Yi Ting, Christina Loh, Chui Lai Kwan, Kevin Yeap and Yap See Tuan, who all made the invitational cut, were, however, not shortlisted to compete in London.

Swimmers would have qualified automatically under invitational time at previous Olympics but the qualification system was changed as FINA wanted to limit the field to 900.

Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia secretary Edwin Chong said Cai Lin has accepted the offer.

"She made the cut after some countries declined to accept the invitation for a particular discipline," said Edwin yesterday.

"Cai Lin's time was in the top-10 ranking list. We, however, could earn more slots on merit over the next few days.

"Yi Ting stands a good chance as she is ranked inside the top 10 in the women's 100m breaststroke."

Cai Lin was delighted to receive the good news.

"We were disappointed when none of us were on the initial list. Then I heard the closing date was extended to July 9. I am happy to swim in my second straight Olympics," said Cai Lin.
