Bayern dismiss talk of Pirlo move

BERLIN: Bayern Munich yesterday dismissed speculation they are about to sign Italian international playmaker Andrea Pirlo from Juventus.

According to Italian press reports, the Bundesliga club have made a E10 million (RM39 million) offer for the 33-year-old who is under contract with Juve until 2014.

"Bayern have neither made an offer to Juventus nor had contact with the player and his advisors," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a statement.

Pirlo impressed during the recent Euro 2012 tournament in which Italy beat England on penalties to advance to the semi-finals before falling 4-0 to Spain in the final.

Meanwhile, midfielder Andreas Ottl has left relegated Hertha Berlin to join Augsburg on a two-year contract, the Bavarian club announced yesterday.

Ottl, 27, is a former German under-21 international who has made 135 top-flight appearances with Bayern Munich, Nuremberg and Hertha.

Hertha were relegated from the top tier of the Bundesliga at the end of last season after losing a play-off against Fortuna Dusseldorf.

PARIS: Nice defender Francois Clerc has reached agreement to sign a three-year deal with Ligue 1 rivals Saint-Etienne subject to a medical, his new club confirmed yesterday.

Clerc, who learned his trade at Lyon where he won league titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008, has played at Nice for two seasons, appearing in 71 games and scoring six goals.

The 29-year-old has also played 13 times for the French national side.

Clerc becomes Saint-Etienne's second recruit for the new season after midfielder Renaud Cohade, who joined from Valenciennes. AFP
