CHANTS of "Hey Wager, you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind. Hey Wager! Go Wager!!" sung to the tune of Hey Mickey! and "We are the champions" Queen's famous song turned sporting event anthem could be heard emanating from the Petaling Jaya Stadium on a recent Saturday morning.

The stadium was home to more than 300 HSBC employees and their families from its headquarters and branches nationwide that were there for a friendly game of touch rugby.

Held in conjunction with the HSBC Asian 5 Nations (A5N) tournament, a total eight teams of 15 players each participated in the tournament prior to the HSBC A5N Division II and III games.

Employees took great effort in choosing their team names and jerseys.

There were the Wagers in royal blue jerseys made up of a mix of employees from HSBC's headquarters including CEO Mukhtar Hussain, Trailblazers from the Technology and Services department in chili red, Rough Riders comprising HSBC Amanah employees in electric green and Direct Destroyer in fluorescent yellow from the bank's Direct Business.

Employees from branches across the regions also drove and flew in for the games.

There were the Borneo Head Hunters from Regional East Malaysia in amber, Ridiculous in Pink in none other than shocking pink jerseys from Regional Centre, The Monstars in electric purple from Regional Peninsular East/Regional North and the Southern Wallabies in bright turquoise from Regional South.

"We have always had a proud association with rugby. The values of rugby echo those of the bank -- sportsmanship, fair play, respect, courage and integrity,"  said Jon Chivers, Head of Sales and Distribution, Retail Banking and Wealth Management, HSBC Bank Malaysia.

The day started off with a coaching clinic organised by HSBC and members of the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU).

It was a close fight and it went down to the wire but Trailblazers proved to be the best of the lot, beating Wagers in the final while Borneo Head Hunters beat Direct Destroyer for third placing.

After the HSBC employee tournament and before the Division II and III matches, HSBC also hosted 60 underprivileged children from Wake House, Educare and Puchong Learning Centre for a coaching clinic with members of HSBC-ARFU's Coaching Tour.
