JOHOR BARU: TEARS of joy ran down the face of Jasmine Mohd Sharipudin as she presented a cash donation of RM500 to the Surau Haji Omar Ahmad (SHOA) committee, in Jalan Perling, Kampung Datuk Onn, Johor Baru recently.
Accompanied by her mother Juriah Mohamed, a former state Girl Guides (GG) commissioner, Johor Baru GG district commissioner Halizan Jufri and state GG International commissioner Aminah Elias, Jasmine, 17, presented cash to SHOA treasurer Beram Ismail.
On hand to witness the simple ceremony was SHOA secretary Mastor Kormin.
Jasmine said she slogged to save the money by selling goodies, knitted products and worked part-time during weekends.
Her efforts paid off as in less than a month, she achieved her target.
This is Jasmine's second community service contribution.
Prior to this, she donated an air conditioner to the management of the Princess Elizabeth School, a special education primary school for blind and myopic children.
"Serving the community is ingrained in me. To receive the highest GG award, I have been making contributions to the community for the past 12 months," said the fifth former from SMK Sultan Ibrahim Girls schools (SIGS) here.
Jasmine, who joined the movement five years ago, thanked her mother, who is also a former secondary school principal, for her encouragement and invaluable advice on being a successful GG leader.
"I will keep up the good work for as long as I can. Once a GG always a GG," said the youngest of seven siblings.
Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of SHOA committee, Mastor thanked Jasmine for her generosity.
"Jasmine's aunt, Fauziah Mohamed, has lived in this neighbourhood for over 30 years and she took care of Jasmine when she was a toddler," said Mastor.
Halizan, who later awarded a certificate of appreciation from the district GG movement to Jasmine, also lauded her praiseworthy effort.
"Jasmine is one of the several active and diligent Rangers from our association. I hope her junior colleagues will emulate her good deeds," she said.
Jasmine was the only Johor representative to receive the Queen's Guide award from the Raja Permaisuri Agong at the association's annual general meeting held in Ipoh in June.
