At the 23rd International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2012) in Kuala Lumpur recently, lecturer Jasmine Lee Hee Jeong of the Department of Computer Science and Networked System, Faculty of Science and Technology, Sunway University, clinched a gold award for her research project HelloMeT – a tool for developing electronic textbooks on the Internet.
This tool is an electronic textbook-based mind map that can be used to develop electronic textbooks with multimedia content like videos and flash. It has been tested with students and staff of Sunway University. They are able to use the tool to create their own textbooks either online or as a standalone and can be carried in a USB thumb drive. This project took three months from conception to development.
At the same event, another team from Sunway University comprising lecturer Dr Pu Chuan Chin and master’s student Kelvyn Law Yeong Hui, bagged a bronze award for their indoor-location based information system. It utilises Wi-Fi and receives signal strength (RSS) to an estimate location of a smartphone. Using location finding and navigation, various convenient services can be developed for handheld gadgets. It provides useful location-specific information and displays automatically on a screen or a smartphone. The information can include guidance, notices and advertisements previously stored on a web server.
Sunway University offers the Doctor of Philosophy (Computing), the MSc in Computer Science (by research) and MSc in Psychology (Organisational) under the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Masters in Management and Masters in Money, Banking and Finance under the Sunway University Business School. Postgraduate students of the Faculty of Science and Technology are exposed to an incubator of research that develops critical thinking and keeps students at the leading edge of technology trends.
Sunway postgraduate students enjoy classes at the new Graduate Centre in Sunway University. The centre is also a venue for conferences and dialogues for students to attend which the university hopes will stimulate intellectual thinking and discovery.
