    Postgraduate: Reaching career heights

MARKETPLACE competition becomes stiffer as a larger segment of society enters employment armed with university qualifications. At Wawasan Open University (WOU), you find a trusted ‘brand’ that has professional concerns in mind and aims to give students a competitive edge – by offering industry-focused postgraduate programmes.

Students have the opportunity of obtaining a master’s, postgraduate diploma or doctorate qualification from WOU, studying via open distance learning (ODL) while they work, to add to their academic credentials and competencies.

WOU currently offers nine postgraduate programmes in business, public administration, construction, manufacturing, education and philosophy. The programmes have been developed through consultation with experts from academia and related industries.

Three of WOU’s postgraduate programmes are from the School of Business and Administration (SBA) — Commonwealth Executive MBA (CeMBA), Commonwealth Executive Master of Public Administration (CeMPA), and Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration.

For those keen in pursuing a master’s degree in a more specialised field, the School of Science and Technology offers the MBA in Construction Management (MBA-CM) and in Manufacturing and Production Management (MBA-MPM).

The MBA-CM will appeal to engineers, quantity surveyors, architects, construction project managers, planners, contractors and property developers, as they will acquire competencies to manage the overall construction environment, while the MBA-MPM empowers students to oversee the entire manufacturing business operations.

WOU also seeks to support the government’s aspirations and become a partner in enhancing the skills of in-service teachers. “Since the Education Ministry wants to train more teachers, we hope to be seen as a provider for this kind of education so that the ministry can send their trainee teachers who seek to upgrade themselves to WOU,” says WOU Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Datuk Dr Ho Sinn Chye.

The School of Education, Communications and Languages offers the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education, Master of Education, and the Master and Doctor of Philosophy programmes.

For the postgraduate education programmes, adult learners will study IT, research, leadership skills and education theories for real-life application to classroom situations, education management and administration. Graduates can find employment as teachers, lecturers, academics, researchers, administrators and professional educators.

Meanwhile, the Master and Doctor of Philosophy programmes are offered, by research only, in the fields of arts and humanities — languages, literature, cultural studies, film and television studies, education and history.
