Undergraduate Focus: College launches hospitality and tourism programme
Malaysia’stourism and hospitality industry is set to grow at an explosive rate given the push by the government’s Economic Transformation Programme. Addressing the rising demand for skilled professionals who can support the industry’s high growth, KBU is offering a BSc (Hons) Tourism and Hospitality Business Management (3+0) in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University in the UK.
According to Low Hong Keng, Head of KBU’s School of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) is rated one of the top universities in hospitality courses in the UK. Furthermore, in a research assessment exercise, the university was also confirmed as a premier centre for research in tourism and hospitality
With the collaboration with SHU, KBU is able to tap into the university’s reputed expertise and experience in the industry. KBU adopts the same academic calendar, teaching materials and assessment throughout the programme and students will obtain the same award as the SHU students. There will also be opportunities for students to transfer credit should they be interested to study in the UK.
KBU is currently offering a 30 per cent rebate on its tuition fee for BSc (Hons) Tourism and Hospitality Business Management for its inaugural intake.
Students with a diploma in hospitality and tourism management, or other similar qualifications in hotel or tourism management, are eligible to apply direct into Year Two of the course, subject to course-matching by KBU.
Upon completion of the degree, students have the option to choose their career in hotel management, conference planning, theme park operation, food and catering services or tourism.
KBU also offers the Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management (DHTM) where students are trained in a simulated work environment comprising a well-equipped training kitchen, a cafe, a hotel and tour office.
Students are also taught housekeeping duties including bed-arrangement, cleaning and sanitation procedures. This type of hands-on practical training ensures that students are adequately prepared and equipped when they step out into the working world. In addition, students are required to undergo a three-month compulsory internship in major hotels or restaurants.
