Undergraduate Focus: Opening new realms in biology

DEVELOPMENT in science and technology has led to the creation of many new things that benefit humans. It also creates an alternative to new discoveries, utilising existing knowledge. One such field, now in the forefront, is bioinformatics.

Bioinformatics, coined from the words ‘bio’ and ‘information’, involves the combined field of biology and information process.

By definition, it is the application of information technology and computer science to the field of molecular biology. This field encompasses various disciplines such as information technology, computer science, medicine and mathematics.

Now development in the field of biology is influenced by processes in bioinformatics. One example is virology, where bioinformatics has helped to speed up its development.

There are many job opportunities for bioinformatics graduates. The Management & Science University (MSU) through the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences (FHLS) complements the needs of highly skilled experts in the bioinformatics industry.

The course is a three-year programme and is open to those who pass their STPM, matriculation, diploma or other qualifications recognised by the MSU Senate.

MSU is committed to ensuring the best for its students. A comprehensive range of visiting professors who conduct regular semester visits provide valuable input to students. Furthermore, various skills enhancement programmes that are aimed to improve competitiveness are offered to students.

The International Students Exchange Programme (ISEP) Unit at MSU assists students in enriching their academic pursuits at the international level. Through ISEP students may choose one of more than forty universities located in the US, UK, Australia, Eastern Europe, South Africa, Japan, New Zealand, India, or Indonesia to complete their degrees. The opportunity to study at these universities will further enrich their development and enhance their standings for better career prospects.

Apart from the bioinformatics programme, FHLS currently offers diploma and bachelor programmes in a variety of fields including biomedical science, food service technology, pharmacy, optometry, nursing, nutrition, medical laboratory technology, occupational safety and health, traditional Chinese medicine, forensic science and diagnostic imaging (radiography).
