Zero to 12: Groundwork for future successes

ONE of the National Key Results Areas (NKRAs) identified under the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) is improving student outcomes.

As part of this NKRA, PEMANDU, the Performance Management & Delivery Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department, has been working closely with the Ministry of Education to disseminate the government’s pre-school fees assistance scheme and pre-school launching grant scheme to the public.

The Ministry Of Education is starting from the ground up, focusing on pre-schools as part of a larger encompassing plan to ensure access to quality and affordable education to every Malaysian.

The pre-school fees assistance scheme has seen participating pre-schools all over the country identifying students whose families are in need of financial assistance. More often than not, these pre-schools are in rural areas and cater to students from low-income families.

The pre-school launching grant scheme is working to improve teaching facilities in pre-schools in Malaysia – the grant money has been used by pre-schools to buy teaching equipment and improve the school building, all of which contribute to the quality of the education the students receive.

Here, we speak to parents of young children who have benefited from the pre-school fees assistance scheme, and to principals of pre-schools that have been able to develop under the pre-school launching grant scheme.
