KOTA BARU: In conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, 1,500 inmates of the Pengkalan Chepa Prison Department here will be allowed to meet their families for two days, beginning Tuesday.

The department's deputy superintendent, Malik Redzuan Omar, said yesterday the meeting would be held from 8.15am to 4.15pm.

"Priority will be given to families of Muslim inmates."

He said according to regulations, the inmates at moral rehabilitation centres and Henry Gurney School could also meet their families. He added that families were required to bring their visitor and identity cards to facilitate entry.

"Families are not allowed to bring food and drinks from outside. They are required to buy food from the prison canteen.

"The move is to prevent families from smuggling prohibited items, such as money, to prisoners," he said, adding that the department's decision to allow visits did not involve prisoners on parole as they were allowed to be with their families under prison supervision.

The department is also carrying out activities to bring inmates and their families closer, including the Family Link Programme that facilitates the integration of inmates into the community upon their release. Bernama
