RAMADAN SPIRIT: NSTP welfare club organises treat for underprivileged, old folk

KUALA LUMPUR: A TEAM of 150 volunteers teamed up yesterday to cook and pack 6,000 packets of bubur lambuk at the New Straits Times Press Berhad (NSTP)'s Balai Berita in Jalan Riong here yesterday. The volunteers, including foreign culinary students from Taylor's University, laboured to cook 400kg of rice in 20 large pots under the 1Malaysia Media Charity Bubur Lambuk programme.

The programme is organised by the NSTP Editorial Department Welfare, Sports and Recreational Club.

The yearly event saw the food being distributed to homes of underprivileged children and old folks in the Klang Valley, and also to the policemen and firemen who were on duty yesterday.

For first-year culinary student Mohamed Hatim Zubair from Sri Lanka who helped out with the preparation, he was amazed at the tradition of serving the dish during Ramadan.

As this is his first time celebrating the festival without his family, the 21-year said he was glad to be helping others who were less fortunate, as it helped ease his homesickness.

The programme was launched by Rural and Regional Development Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal.

Also present were NSTP group managing editor Abdul Jalil Hamid, NST group editor Datuk Syed Nadzri Syed Harun and Berita Harian group editor Datuk Mior Kamarul Shahid.

The programme was jointly-organised with Giant Supermarket, Adabi Consumer Industries Sdn Bhd, Rukun Tetangga Kondo Rakyat Desa Pantai, Petronas and the 4x4 Selangor Club.
