KUALA LUMPUR: A taxi driver, who sued a policeman and the government for negligence after he was shot in 2010, reached a settlement with the defendants yesterday.

Sessions Court Judge Unaizah Mohd recorded a consent judgment without admission of liability after the defendants, Lance Corporal Norhesham Mohd Nor and the government, agreed to pay Yeow Leong Kang RM33,000 in damages.

Yeow, 43, who was represented by counsel Lim Lip Eng.

"After the shooting incident, many people thought that I was a criminal. Now, I'm glad that my name is cleared. I have no permanent injuries, only scars in both legs."

Federal counsel Nur Aqilah Ishak acted for the defendants.

Yeow had filed the suit in November last year, claiming that he was inside his taxi when Norhesham came and shot his legs without any warning or reason.

He claimed that his taxi was parked near the post office in Jalan Pudu when the incident happened at 4.30pm on Sept 23, 2010.

In his statement of claim, Yeow said he had to undergo treatment at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre for three days, during which Norhesham visited him.

He said during the visit, the policeman had repeatedly apologised and admitted that he had shot him by mistake.
