Cities abroad keen to forge ties with Kuching

KUCHING: As it marks its 24th anniversary as a city this year, Kuching has had offers from cities abroad to establish bilateral ties.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor James Chan Khay Syn said Zhenjiang in China's Jiangsu Province and Guro in South Korea had indicated interest to forge ties with Kuching.
He disclosed this during the simultaneous launching of the 24th anniversary celebration of the city and the Kuching Festival by Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud last night.
Chan said the interest to establish relations with Kuching received a boost after it was honoured with the Tourist City award by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, the World Cities Scientific Development Alliance and the Sister Cities International last year.
Since then, he said, Kuching had established ties with Zhanjiang and Kunming in China.
"These relationships, once in place, should promote tourist inflow and attract investors for the betterment of the Kuching economy," he added.  -- BERNAMA
