Developer charged over demolition of theatre

IPOH: The developer who demolished the iconic Majestic Theatre in Jalan C.M. Yusuf here has been hauled up in court for demolishing the building without approval.

Mayor Datuk Roshidi Hashim said the council had never issued any permit to demolish the 70-year-old building, which had been listed for conservation under the Ipoh Structure Plan.

"We issued a stop-work order to the developer on June 26 and the developer called me to apologise."

Speaking yesterday after chairing the council's board meeting, Roshidi said he would meet the developer soon to discuss how they could save the building.

The developer, he said, had contravened Section 70(16)(i) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act for demolishing the theatre and Section 26 of the Town and Country and Planning Act for carrying out development without a planning permit. He said the developer faced a maximum of three years' jail or a RM50,000 fine, or both, if convicted.

Roshidi reminded developers that there were 114 locations in the city that had been listed under the Ipoh Structure Plan for conservation. Among them were buildings in Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab, Jalan St. John, Jalan S.P. Seenivasagam and Jalan Tun Sambathan.
