UNFORTUNATE: Man dies after hillside collapses on his excavator

MARANG: AN excavator driver was buried alive when the side of a hill collapsed on his machine at Kampung Bukit Undang here yesterday.

In the 5.15pm incident, Mohd Amri Sidek, 26, from Kampung Padang Mengkuang, here, was excavating the earth atop Bukit Koloh to be loaded onto lorries when the hillside to his left collapsed, burying the excavator and himself in about two metres of earth.

The eldest of 11 siblings, who began working at the quarry about three months ago, had no chance of escaping and was found in the driver’s seat when rescuers dug him out about an hour later.

Despite being a sunny day yesterday, it rained heavily on Sunday night and the downpour was believed to have loosened the earth on the hillside.

About six lorries were seen at the foot of the hill but no one had come forward to offer any information about the quarry operation located on a secluded hill, 800m from the main road.

Only a dirt road connects the site to the main road.

Rescuers had to negotiate a winding dirt road around the barren hill to reach the landslide location.

Amri’s mother, Sapinah Yaakub, 55, was a picture of sorrow as she watched rescuers working frantically to rescue her son.

“He was a good son and loving brother to his siblings. I saw him last when he came home at noon to bring two packets of nasi bungkus for his kid brothers,” she said.
