MALACCA: A former clerk at the state Department of Environment was sentenced by the Sessions Court yesterday to a year's jail and RM20,000 fine for accepting two bribes amounting to RM500.

Ahmad Puad Bak, a N17 grade administrative assistant, was found guilty on Feb 7.

He was charged with accepting RM200 from Chwah Thiam Chye at Jalan Tang Yee Bew off Jalan Hang Tuah about 2.15pm on July 9 four years ago and receiving an additional RM300 from the same person at the same location about 3.50pm on July 15 the same year.

Both amounts were said to be an incentive to get the accused to approve an application for open burning requested by Syarikat Wong Maju Enterprise.

Judge Ahmad Sazali Omar ruled that the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt on the prosecution's case and sentenced the accused to serve six months' jail and RM10,000 fine for the first offence and a year's jail and another RM10,000 fine for the second offence, the sentences to run concurrently.
