Fire destroys food plant

KOTA KINABALU: Factory workers ran for safety after fire broke out at a food processing plant in Jalan Burung Keleto, Inanam, here, yesterday.

Thirteen workers were sleeping in their quarters, which was located close to the factory, when the incident happened at 1.30am.

Benjo Sarip, 34, who was the first to wake up after smelling something burning, immediately rushed out to check.

"I saw thick smoke coming from the factory and alerted the others to leave the premises.

"After a few minutes, the fire started to spread to other parts of the factory.

"We could feel the heat," he said, adding that by then, a security guard had contacted the Fire and Rescue Department.

The department's public relations officer Mohd Affendy K. Ramin said 34 firefighters helped put out the fire by 3.18am.

"No one was injured in the incident. We are investigating the cause of the fire as well as the total losses."
