FIRST GATHERING: Descendants of Tok Deraman find each other through Facebook and email

PASIR MAS: MORE than 500 descendants of Tok Deraman Kampung Langgar, with some from as far as China, attended a Hari Raya mass gathering held here yesterday.

The first-time gathering which was held at the hall of Sekolah Menengah Salor saw family members ranging from the oldest who is 88 years old and the youngest -- a 1-year-old boy.

Tok Deraman Kampung Langgar Family Organisation chairman Zakaria Jusoh said the gathering was organised to further strengthen family ties stretching back to five generations.

"We decided to set up this meeting after realising that many of us did not know each other but recently we managed to contact them through various channels, including Facebook and email."

The 60-year-old former teacher said he and other family members came up with the idea to hold the reunion in 2007 and started making preparations since May.

He said Tok Deraman Kampung Langgar, whose real name was Abdul Rahman Mohamad, was a former handicraft maker and died in the 1940s. He left two wives and nine children.

Third-generation descendant Asri Mat Derit said they were shocked upon hearing about the high number of Tok Deraman Kampung Langgar descendants until they attended the gathering. "All we know is that Tok Deraman Kampung Langgar's descendants live all over Malaysia and it stretches to five generations.

"We have several large groups of families in Kelantan, Selangor and even in Johor," said the 43-year-old enforcement officer.

The oldest family member was Zakaria's mother, Esah Drahman of Kampung Salor.

The female members of the family gathered to prepare dishes and delicacies a day before the gathering.

Yesterday, family members enjoyed a sumptuous spread ranging from Kelantan nasi dagang, lemang, ketupat and chicken curry to various types of kuih.
