KOTA KINABALU: The people of Sabah should grab the opportunity to be an entrepreneur with the help of Tabung Ekonomi Kumpulan Usaha Niaga (Tekun) under the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry.
Deputy Chief Minister and state Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin said the government had prepared various programmes, such as Tekun, to help people start their own businesses.
"My advice to the youths is that they should try their hand in business and not depend on the government as it has its limits."
Yahya was speaking while visiting several shops that had applied for loans under Tekun to open businesses at Putatan near here, yesterday.
He stressed that the people should make full use of their capabilities as business was one of the highest income-generating fields.
Hilary Donatus, 38, started his own car service and spare parts shop with help from Tekun.
He started his business two years ago with initial capital of RM25,000. He later got another RM8,000 aid from Tekun.
"Now my monthly gross income can reach up to RM 17,000.
"I am really grateful and planning to apply for another loan to expand my business," said Hilary, who has 16 years' experience as a mechanic before opening his own shop.
