TOO FAR FROM HELP: Firemen took almost 5 hours to reach house in rural village

SANDAKAN: A WOMAN and her granddaughter were burnt to death in a fire that destroyed their two-storey wooden house at Kampung Minunsuh here yesterday.

The charred remains of Adriana Chrisdayenillyu Pulgrintius, 6, and Jumah Gaurod, 48, were found in a bedroom on the upper floor.

The victims and four other family members were asleep in the house when the fire started. It was learnt that Adriana and Jumah were sleeping in the same room.

District Fire and Rescue Department Chief Jemi Shin Ujin said the girl and her grandmother were trapped in the room.

"The department received a distress call from the victims' neighbour at 12.24am and we despatched nine firemen to the scene."

The firefighters only arrived at 5.15am because the village was located far away, about 170km from here, and poor road conditions.

Adriana's parents, Pulgrintius Wilson, 27, and Cornlius Radi, 26, her younger sister, Nicy, 4, and uncle, Adrian Radi, 23, managed to escape unhurt.

"When we reached the area, the blaze had already destroyed the whole house although the villagers tried to put out the fire."

Jemi said the family members who survived escaped by jumping out of their bedroom windows.

He added that the cause of the fire was under investigation.
