KOTA KINABALU: A group of students came together recently for a theatre performance in an effort to introduce the art to a wider audience in Sabah.

The play, entitled "On the Brightside", was performed by students from several secondary schools and higher learning institutions.

Calling themselves the Green Leaf Theatre House, the play was held in Penampang on June 30.

The play tells of seven individuals who are passionate in drama, but have to go on separate ways because they find it hard to stage a performance after finishing high school.

Playwright and director Mohd Hazli Ali Zapar said they hoped to raise awareness of youth-related issues in the play besides bringing a message of change, acceptance, friendship and courage.

Apart from providing a platform for the public to be more involved in issues concerning society, Hazli said the play was aimed at bringing students of varied backgrounds together to promote friendship, healthy dialogue and exchange of ideas.

He added that the theatre organisation also made it a point to underscore the idea of acceptance as well as empathy towards the suffering of others to promote a caring society.

"This is in line with their mission to use the supremacy of theatre to open healthy discussions, touch hearts and question accepted notions."
