GRAND AFFAIR: Dignitaries, ministers among 1,500 guests at Olympian's glittering bash
KUALA LUMPUR: IT was like a scene from a royal wedding when international badminton star Datuk Lee Chong Wei and his wife Datin Wong Mew Choo walked into the banquet hall at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, here, last night.
Dressed in a black tuxedo, Lee looked dashing while Wong looked elegant in a stunning white designer wedding dress embedded with more than 10,000 Swarovski crystals.
The dazzling couple waved at guests waiting in the grandly decorated hall foyer at 8.45pm before joining them at the reception.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah as well as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and his wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman, cabinet ministers, dignitaries and sports personalities were among the 1,500 guests who attended the grand wedding yesterday.
China's ambassador to Malaysia, Chai Xi, was also among dignitaries who congratulated the couple.
Chai praised Lee for his outstanding achievements and said the latter was an idol to Malaysians for making the country proud.
"His excellent sportsmanship has earned him fans from as far as China. I am proud of him."
Earlier, the couple had an audience with the king and queen, where Lee presented a gold badminton racquet to the royal couple.
The red carpet event, hailed as the "wedding of the year", comprised six best men and six bridesmaids, which included top national doubles players Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, who ushered them in.
After an 11-year courtship, Lee and Wong tied the knot yesterday.
Today, more than 1,500 guests, including the couple's family and friends as well as celebrities, will attend the Chinese customary dinner at the same venue.
The reception, hosted by ntv7 personalities Charles Mohand and Jasmine Abu Bakar, was streamed live on ntv7.
A Bernama report said Najib tweeted his wishes to the newlyweds yesterday.
"Congrats, Lee Chong Wei on your wedding to Wong Mew Choo. May you both enjoy happy tidings in the years to come," he posted late last night.
