HOT TREAT: Visitors will be spoilt for choice at the event from May 25 to 27
KUALA LUMPUR: LANGKAWI Development Authority (Lada) will organise Langkawi International Laksa Carnival (Lilac) from May 25 to 27 to promote the famous Malaysian delicacy to both local and international tourists.
The carnival will be held at Laman Padi, Pantai Cenang Langkawi and hosted by international celebrity chef Redzuawan Ismail, or Chef Wan.
At the launch of Lilac at Saloma Bistro, here, yesterday, Chef Wan said laksa was a popular local delicacy in Malaysia and almost every state had its own flavours, which made it exotic.
"There are many methods of cooking laksa and each has its own unique flavour."
Lada chief executive officer Tan Sri Khalid Ramli said being Malaysia's food ambassador, Chef Wan would introduce the local delicacies to foreign tourists.
"The main goal of this carnival is to introduce our different cultures to tourists through Lilac."
At the carnival, a Laksa Garden will sell various kinds of laksa from Kelantan, Pahang, Perlis, Penang, Kedah, Johor, as well as from countries such as Thailand and Cambodia, among others.
A laksa making competition, inter-school culinary competition and laksa eating competition will also be held. Entries for the laksa making competition is open to all Malaysians starting today.
Participants need to submit their laksa recipe with a photograph of themselves and their laksa. The top 30 recipes will be displayed at the carnival and compiled into the Laksa Cookbook, published by Lada.
The winner will take home the Laksa Ambassador of The Year award and RM10,000.
Culinary schools nationwide are invited to participate in the inter-school culinary competition on the second and third days of the carnival. The school with the best tasting, presentation and efficient laksa making methods will receive RM6,000 and a certificate.
The laksa eating competition will also be held during the period and winners stand to win cash prizes and Lilac goodies.
Other attractions will be a photo session with Chef Wan, sky dancers, fire starters and colouring contest for children.
Celebrity chefs such as Chef Riz, Chef Shukri, Chef Daisy Lee, Chef Zaidah, Chef Khairul, Chef Chandran and international chefs such as Chef Garth Welsh, Chef Michael Elwing and Chef Frederic Cerchi, will also be there to show off their skills by conducting a live cooking demonstration and share tips and recipes on laksa.
