MALAYSIA is not ready to send an astronaut to the moon yet because of the high cost.
Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Fadilah Yusoff said the current focus was on scientific research at the International Space Station.
She was replying to a question by Datuk Abdul Rahman Bakri (BN-Sabak Bernam) on the direction of the nation's space programme.
She said the government had agreed in principle to continue with the space programme and the focus on research, but it still would depend on the nation's economic standing.
"Although we are not ready yet to realise our dream of going to the moon, we can be proud of our space programme achievements."
Fadilah said the programme also helped develop the field of space science in the nation and people were more aware of it now.
