HEROIC ACT: Passing motorist pulls out two trapped in overturned car

ALOR STAR: TWO men, unconscious and trapped in a  car which had plunged into a two-metre deep canal in Sanglang, Kedah, near here yesterday,  owed their lives to a passing motorist.

The two, Norezan Ahmad, 35 and Abdul Rahim Saad, 32, both from Perlis, were heading towards Alor Star when the accident occurred at Km27 Jalan Alor Star-Kangar at 9.45am.

A passing car driven by Afiq Shazwan Ramli, a 21-year-old contractor, was flagged down by an elderly man at the scene.

"The elderly man looked very anxious and nervous," Afiq said.

"I thought he had trouble with his car and needed some help. I merely stopped to help him, but was shocked when he told me that a car, which had overtaken his vehicle, had lost control and plunged into a canal."

Afiq said he then saw a car which had turned turtle and had almost submerged in the canal.

Without hesitating, he dived into the canal and pulled out the driver, who was unconscious, out of the car and dragged him to safety.

"I went back to the vehicle to check if there were passengers in it.

"I saw another man who was also unconscious. I dragged him out of the vehicle," added Afiq, who was on his way home from Alor Star to Taman Sena Indah in Kangar, after sending his wife to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah here.

Kubang Pasu district police chief Superintendent Ibrahim Mohd Yusof said the two men were sent to Hospital Tuanku Fauziah in Kangar where their condition was reported to be stable.
