'Palm oil sustainable as biofuel'

JAKARTA: Palm oil is safe to be used as biodiesel and meets the Renewable Fuel Standard of the United States, said a researcher from Bogor Agricultural Institute.

Responding to a statement by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Jan 27 that oil palm was only able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 per cent, Prof Budi Indra Setiawan said the data used by EPA should be reviewed. EPA had set a carbon emission reduction requirement for palm oil at at least 20 per cent to enable it to be used as biofuel in the US.

The carbon dioxide emission calculated by EPA was 50 tonnes per hectare per year, which is equivalent to 28 per cent emission reduction, he said, higher than what was required by the agency. Bernama
