PM: Bid to replace flag is treason

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak slammed the move to replace Jalur Gemilang with a new flag as a disgraceful act amounting to treason.

"We condemn this because the national flag is something we must be proud of," he said after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting here.

Najib said the national flag reflected the sovereignty of the country and, therefore, people should respect and not politicise it.

He was commenting on an incident during the Merdeka countdown last month, where supporters of Bersih had brought a "new flag" to the rally, which they allegedly demanded should replace the Jalur Gemilang.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the police had submitted their investigation papers to the Attorney-General's Chambers for action.
