KULIM: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry is to organise a "Jom Masuk Kampung" programme this month to eradicate hardcore poverty and register physically-challenged people.

Deputy Minister Datuk Heng Seai Kei said the programme would be launched in the Padang Serai parliamentary constituency with the participation of community leaders.

"So far, only 350,000 physically-challenged people have registered with us but, going by the statistics of the World Health Organisation (WHO), 10 per cent of the population of a country comprises physically-challenged people, which in our country would be 2.8 million," she told reporters after handing out aid to the Indian community in the Lunas state constituency yesterday evening.

At the event, the parent-teacher association of seven Tamil schools in Lunas were given RM3,000 each. -- BERNAMA
