FIELD STORMED: They pushed through barriers

MALACCA: IN what was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration,   Bersih 3.0 participants here turned unruly and pushed through a Malacca Historical City Council (MBMB) barricade,  causing injury to two enforcement personnel.

In the 2pm demonstration, some 500 people stormed the Dataran Pahlawan field in Jalan Merdeka, where a brass band competition was being held, pushed through the metal barricade and some of them pushed the enforcement personnel aside.

Council mayor Zainal Abu said that two of his officers were injured in the incident, which also saw the demonstrators throwing water at the enforcement team.

"One of the officers was pulled from behind and the metal barricade fell on him. It injured his hand and he had to be taken to Hospital Melaka by a Civil Defence ambulance on stand-by.

"Another officer also fell on the ground and sustained bruises."

Zainal was saddened with the Bersih rally at Dataran Pahlawan as the council had given permission to the organisers to use the Stadium Tun Fatimah at Bukit Serindit or one of the 10 fields at the Hang Jebat Stadium Complex in Krubong.

"But they still gathered illegally at Dataran Pahlawan, thus causing inconvenience to the people, especially tourists."

State police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said the rally organisers had not applied for a permit to hold the gathering. "We are looking at taking action against organisers for holding the illegal gathering."

This police car was the target of protesters near the Sogo shopping complex in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman yesterday.

An unidentified policeman, injured in the melee, being sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment yesterday.

Constable Badrul Hisham Yusuf received five stitches for a head injury caused by an object hurled at him at Dataran Merdeka yesterday.
