PADANG BESAR: The suffering of the famine-stricken people in Somalia, especially children, has touched the hearts of 10,000 students of 46 Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM).

Students from the science schools pledged their support for Malaysian Medical Relief Society (Mercy)'s humanitarian aid at the MRSM Innovative Community event in MRSM Beseri, here, yesterday.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu's press secretary, Jamsari Jamaludin, launched the event, aimed at raising funds for famine victims in Somalia.

Present were Malaysia Innovation Foundation chief executive officer Muhammad Azip Mustafa, Al Niaga Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Mazlee Md Ramlee, Mercy Malaysia representative Dr Iqbal Muhamad and MRSM Beseri principal Mohd Salim Lebai Bulat.

Muhamad Ariff Zulhafiz, 16, said he was saddened to learn about the plight of the children in Somalia, most of whom had died from starvation.

"My heart sank to see the frail children in Somalia, who have nothing to eat. I hope to do something to lessen their burden."

Echoing his concern was Munirah Hasmi, 16.

"My classmates and I will work out a way to raise funds. Hopefully, the money will help Mercy supply more food to the children," she said.
