PUTRAJAYA: The encouragement and motivation given by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah has inspired Malaysian women to stand on their own, the Welfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) said.

Its president, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who is also the wife of  Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said the queen had constantly vested a deep interest in the development of women and families as well as always been interested in activities that could further improve their lives.

These included the setting up of the Tuanku Nur Zahirah Foundation in aid of women songket weavers.

“The Bakti members and I are so impressed that, through this foundation, the queen has elevated the country’s heritage craft industry and spearheaded efforts to develop the songket industry, which at one time was in danger of becoming a lost art, especially among the younger generation,” she said at a function, here, yesterday.

The function was held to celebrate Tuanku Nur Zahirah’s reign as queen which will end in the middle of next month.

Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin was appointed as the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Dec 13, 2006.

Also present were Bakti deputy president Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman, who is the wife of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, wife of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Apart from women-related programmes, the queen, Rosmah said, was also concerned for the welfare of her other subjects.

“The queen is also an icon for Malay women, especially those who keep up with the latest fashion.”
