KUALA LUMPUR: A prominent German telecommunications engineer, who is a Tan Sri, was robbed by three parang-wielding men at his Bukit Damansara bungalow recently.

Tan Sri Rainer Althoff, who at one time served as president and chief executive officer of Siemens Malaysia before retiring to live here, was held while he was home alone late at night. Althoff, 66, lives in an affluent gated community that was guarded by security personnel and a closed-circuit television system.

It is believed that the robbers had made their way to his bungalow from the rear, which was facing a hill, and scaled the balcony before confronting Althoff.

Althoff was threatened and he led the robbers to a safe. The robbers then tied up Althoff and took his cash and valuables, including branded watches.

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Azli Abdullah said the robbers spoke fluent English and did not harm Althoff.
